School of Electronic Engineering and Computer Science postgraduate student, Gabryel Mason-Williams, was the recipient of a Google Europe Students with Disabilities Scholarship
This September Gabryel, a first-year PhD student, was awarded a £7000 scholarship from Google to support his studies for the 2023-2024 academic year.
The Google Europe Students with Disabilities Scholarship Google's education and scholarship programmes aim to assist students by breaking down the barriers that prevent them from entering computing and technology. They’ve partnered with EmployAbility, an organisation that supports students with disabilities while they pursue education and careers, to help university students with disabilities work toward their academic goals in the field of computer science.
Gabryel’s PhD project is titled ‘Artificial Neuroscience: Using Mathematics to Control and Understand Deep Learning’ and is supervised by Professor Mark Sandler and Primož Škraba. This project will take current AI systems, which researchers know can do complex things but don't understand how, and aim to understand how and why they work. This research aims to make these systems more explainable and, thus, more fair, robust and easier to interpret.
Commenting on the award, Gabryel said: “This award means a lot to me; It’s a recognition of my hard work and determination to achieve and go above and beyond. The scholarship will embolden me to make sure my disability does not define me by assisting with the additional costs associated with it and allowing me to attend additional conferences and courses and access other resources.”
