International Science and Engineering Excellence Awards (NEW for 2012 entry)

In recognition of the important investment that overseas students are making in their education, we are pleased to offer International Science and Engineering Excellence Awards, new for 2012 entry. These awards are for the value of either £1,500 or £4,000 per year and are designed to reward academic achievement and help attract the brightest and best students from overseas.

International Science and Engineering Excellence Awards will be deducted directly from tuition fees payable to the College. They apply to all taught courses, both undergraduate and postgraduate, offered by the following Schools:

What level of award am I eligible for?

The level of award that a student may be eligible to receive will be based on previous academic attainment. For example, to be eligible to receive an award of £1,500 students must be on track to meet or exceed our minimum entry requirements for the programme of their choice at the point of offer. To be eligible to receive an award of £4,000 per year, students must have achieved grades AAA at A-Level or overseas equivalent or a UK First Class Bachelors degree or overseas equivalent. For overseas equivalents please refer to the tables below.

Undergraduate Overseas Equivalent [XLS 61 KB]
Postgraduate Overseas Equivalent [XLS 52 KB]

As such, many students will be considered for the higher level award of £4,000 award (to replace £1,500) during the confirmation process once their final A-level or Bachelors degree results are confirmed.

How do I apply?

There is no need to complete a separate application form to be considered for an International Science and Engineering Excellence Award. Students will be considered for an award on the basis of the information they provide in their UCAS or online application to Queen Mary.  Successful candidates will be informed of their award via email notification directing them to the MySiS applicant portal by the Admissions Office.

N.B. Successful candidates for the 2012 awards have not yet been confirmed by the Admissions Office. Current offer holders should expect notification by the end of January 2012. Thank you for your patience.

Eligibility criteria

• All eligible candidates must come from a non EU country and be eligible to pay overseas tuition fees;

• Candidates must not be in receipt of any other College scholarship or full fee scholarship from any other source, e.g. Chevening;

• Students who are currently following the Queen Mary International Science and Engineering Programme (ISEFP) and plan to continue their studies in Science and Engineering at Queen Mary will also be considered for these awards as follows:

    i) Students who are awarded a Distinction (an overall average of 70% or more) for the  ISEFP  Foundation Certificate may receive an award of £4,000 per year  for each year of their undergraduate studies.

    ii) Students who are awarded a Merit (overall average of 65 - 69%) or Pass (overall average of 40-64%) for the ISEFP Foundation Certificate may receive an award of £1,500 per year for each year of their undergraduate studies.

• These are partial awards only and are not cumulative. Students will be awarded £1,500 OR £4,000 per year deducted directly from tuition fees payable to the College. Students must be able to finance the remainder of their tuition fees and living expenses;

• Our policy on the payment of awards during years in industry is under consideration;

• Receipt of award for the first year is automatic for all those with the requisite entry qualifications described above. Payment in subsequent years is contingent on overall academic achievement at upper second class standard in each year of study (i.e. students must achieve an overall mark of 60% in every year to maintain the award).

• Where a student experiences extenuating circumstances that affect academic performance or progress, continued receipt of an award will be considered within the College’s existing extenuating circumstances procedures.
