This new wide-ranging series, celebrating the life and work of Mile End Institute patron, Lord Hennessy of Nympsfield, will bring together politicians, policymakers, academics, Queen Mary students and the wider public to explore the major challenges facing British politics and policymaking.
In the inaugural lecture, the award-winning author and historian, Sir Simon Schama, drew on his long expertise in British and Jewish history to explore ‘Bad Chaps, Jews and the Failure of British Decency: Antisemitism in Historical Perspective’.
Peter Hennessy is Britain’s leading constitutional historian, a distinguished broadcaster and one of Britain’s most respected public intellectuals. As a former leader-writer and political correspondent for The Times, Attlee Professor of Contemporary History at Queen Mary across three decades and a member of the House of Lords since 2010, he has made a unique contribution to journalism, academia and government.
The series will continue with Sathnam Sanghera speaking on the legacy of Empire and Baroness Sayeeda Warsi on the contribution of Muslims to British public life.
